Processed meat and seafood is expected to see a higher retail volume and current value growth rate in 2020 compared to the previous year. With home seclusion and the closure of foodservice outlets, consumers have been having their meals at home, thus shifting consumption from foodservice to retail.
Chilled processed poultry (chicken and turkey) registers stronger growth in both volume and current value terms than chilled processed red meat. Processed poultry is seen as offering healthier alternatives to processed red meat.
The biggest players in processed meat and seafood are expected to continue to remain Interrybflot, Myasna Fabryka Favoryt Plus, Ukrainsky Bekon, Globynsky and Yatran' Myasokombinat in 2020. The total private label share is just behind that of Yatran' Myasokombinat, with private label having seen strong growth over the review period, even if its sales and share growth has been a little less spectacular in the last few years compared with the earlier part of the review period.
In the review period premium retail chain Good Wine set up a separate department in its stores for vegan goods, containing about 200 SKUs, all of which were imported. Other retail chains also offer meat substitutes using products like soy, tofu or seitan, working with some of the local start-ups such as Zelena Korova, but have a more limited choice than Good Wine.
Chilled processed meat and seafood is anticipated to show growth over the forecast period as consumers opt more and more for packaged, processed variants of meat and seafood over fresh and unpackaged products due to time constraints and out of convenience. In 2020, Lehko Myronivsky Myasopererobny Zavod VAT introduced marinated meat and poultry products for grilling on the barbecue, a seasonal product, under the brand name Nasha Ryaba Apetytna.
It is anticipated that processed poultry will register higher growth in retail volume and value terms over the forecast period than processed red meat. More and more Ukrainian consumers will opt for processed poultry (chicken and turkey) over processed red meat as they perceive it as a healthier option, especially for children and the elderly who suffer from health complications.
