Chilled processed meat, the largest category in processed meat by volume, has seen growth slow in 2021. This has, in part, resulted from the category’s success in the previous year, in which retail sales were bolstered by the increased amount of time consumers spent at home and restrictions on the operations of consumer foodservice, which increased the frequency of home-cooking.
The fastest-growing category in 2021 continued to be chilled meat and seafood substitutes. The growing number of people following a plant-based diet has created a platform for the broader development of the plant-based offer.
Processed seafood, mostly comprised of shelf stable seafood and chilled processed seafood, has registered a flat performance in 2021 in volume terms. In 2020, shelf stable seafood suffered, as consumers switched to more affordable products, choosing less expensive sources of protein.
Processed meat is expected to see retail volume growth over the forecast period. The main driver of growth will be the large chilled processed meat category, which is benefiting from the rapidly expanding distribution of packaged products, which is enabling them to replace unpackaged ones.
Processed seafood is expected to register a positive performance over the forecast period, as the shelf stable seafood category sees a gradual recovery and chilled processed seafood growth picks up. The main obstacle to more rapid development remains the high level of maturity of the category, which leaves little room for growth on a per capita basis.
The fastest-growing category over the forecast period is expected to be chilled meat and seafood substitutes, though it is set to remain a niche in the Russian market in 2026. Nonetheless, the growing interest in plant-based products, underpinned by media support and increasing consumer awareness of health, environmental and animal welfare issues, will maintain the pace of development in this category at a high level.
