Pizza, both frozen and chilled, has been one of the major beneficiaries of the COVID-19 restrictions in ready meals, driven by convenience and the necessity of home consumption. Due to its quick preparation, it has shifted from being a shared meal for special occasions to a more frequently consumed item during the week as lunch or dinner.
Shelf stable ready meals saw a slight spike in demand when the pandemic hit Brazil, helping most pack types used in this category to grow, as these products were seen as good meals to stock up on in the case of potential shortages or enforced quarantine. The leading pack type, stand-up pouches, continued to gain ground in 2020 and 2021, with metal food cans continuing to lose share in this category.
Food start-up LivUp, which was founded in 2016, introduced ready meals sold in vacuum-sealed plastic packaging, which can be conveniently reheated in microwave ovens, and occupy significantly less storage space, an important feature for single-person households with smaller refrigerators. LivUp has since updated its packaging to use “green plastic” partially made of sugar cane.
Working and studying from home remain a reality for many consumers, particularly those on higher incomes, even as society emerges from the pandemic. The perception of eating as a form of enjoyment has shifted, and the home may continue to be a favoured location for many consumption occasions in the post-pandemic environment.
Growth in the coming years is likely to slow from the spikes seen during the pandemic as daily home-cooking, which is more prevalent among typical non-consumers of ready meals, is likely to see a reduction over the forecast period as out-of-home routines resume. However, demand for convenient meals will still be fuelled by both increased digital knowledge among older consumers and the emergence of younger shoppers as decision-makers, a strategic target for category players.

This is the aggregation of canned/preserved, chilled pizza, chilled, dinner mixes, dried, frozen pizza, frozen ready meals and prepared salads. Note: Ready meals are products that have had recipe ''skills'' added to them by the manufacturer, resulting in a high degree of readiness, completion and convenience. Ready meals are generally accepted to be complete meals that require few or no extra ingredients, however, in the case of canned/preserved ready meals, the term also encompasses meal ''centres’; for dinner mixes, the term encompasses part meals. Some ready meals may require cooking; others may simply need reheating, prior to serving.
