Nevertheless, they were still looking for quick and convenient alternatives to home-cooking, which meant that chilled ready meal sales in 2021 were still well above pre-pandemic levels.
Ready meals packaging is dynamic, with microwaveable metal food cans, embedded spoons and shaped plastic pouches among the innovations launched during the review period. Packaging design is also becoming more sophisticated, with the Dolores brand using a wide range of colours on its metal food cans and high-quality pictures of food on its plastic pouches, for example.
Prepared salads are expected to continue recording positive unit volume growth over the forecast period, in line with the health and wellness trend in Mexico. As consumers return to more hectic lifestyles, quick and easy access to salads, which enjoy a healthy image, will enjoy rising demand.
Growth in demand for ready meals packaging will remain robust during forecast period, with urbanisation, increased female labour force participation and shrinking household size being among the key drivers of this growth. Chilled ready meals and frozen ready meals will be among the top performers, helping to drive strong growth in demand for flexible packaging.
