Even the pandemic could not revive consumer interest in shelf stable ready meals, with the demand for packaging for these products actually declining at an accelerated rate in 2020, with a further decline seen in 2021. Local consumers increasingly perceive shelf stable ready meals as unhealthy due to the high levels of salt, fat and/or preservatives in many of these products.
There was strong growth in demand for frozen ready meals packaging and chilled ready meals packaging when the pandemic hit Sweden in 2020, as these products are generally regarded as being somewhat healthier than shelf stable ready meals. Although the packaging unit volumes of folding cartons, ready meal trays and paper-based trays used in in frozen ready meals grew in 2020, they were declining in 2021.
The packaging unit volumes of plastic trays used in chilled ready meals are expected to rise steadily over the forecast period. The convenience and price-quality ratios of such products, especially in chilled ready meals, are appealing to consumers, particularly younger ones.
Sustainability is expected to continue to grow in importance in ready meals over the forecast period. Felix has announced that it will transition to 100% recyclable, transparent single-serving bowls for its ready meals, claiming that this initiative will facilitate the recycling of an additional 91 tonnes of plastic per annum.
