Paper-based containers – mainly folding cartons, but also paper-based trays – have been recording healthy unit volume growth rates over the review period, with folding cartons particularly dynamic in 2020, albeit before then posting a slight decline in 2021. Both pack types are expected to see further growth over the forecast period.
While plastic-based packaging remained significant in areas such as prepared salads in ready meals, manufacturers continued to explore alternative options as a means of differentiation. For example, Albert Heijn introduced a new line of single-portion prepared salads packaged in PET jars – a product addressing the greater demand for variety and healthy options in ready meals and the need for convenience.
Rising health consciousness, demand for convenience and the continuation of more home-centred lifestyles will drive demand for delivery meal kits and fresh food packages in dinner mixes over the forecast period. Dutch consumers’ increasingly busy lifestyles will result in less time, as well as often less inclination, to prepare meals from scratch.
Unit volume growth of ready meals packaging is expected to be positive over the forecast period, despite a slight dip seen in 2021, following the spike in demand seen in 2020.
