As parents continued to work from home with the added responsibilities of taking care of their children as well as doing the household chores, the convenience that comes with shelf stable ready meals seemed particularly attractive.
Glass jars continues to lose unit volume share in shelf stable ready meals packaging. While the glass jar is generally considered a favourable pack type due to the premium image and feel that it can lend to products and brands, the heavy weight and fragile nature of glass packaging has been encouraging consumers to consider alternatives such as folding cartons, plastic pouches, flexible plastic, aluminium trays and other plastic trays.
Flexible plastic will continue to be the main pack type in frozen ready meals over the forecast period. Flexible plastic is a popular packaging type because it is durable and cost-effective.
Folding cartons, which has already become the leading pack type in shelf stable ready meals in Turkey, will continue gaining further unit volume share as a pack type in this product area, with shelf stable ready meals’ former main pack type, metal food cans, expected to see further declines in the coming years. This can be attributed largely to the increasing environmental consciousness of Turkish consumers and the increasing focus on sustainability among the country’s packaged food companies.
