RTD coffee remained a small category in Bosnia-Herzegovina in 2018, largely due to a lack of tradition. However, growth is being driven by increasing consumer awareness and widening availability.
RTD coffee was only available in the off-trade in Bosnia-Herzegovina at the end of the review period. The category is not yet mature enough to justify expansion into the on-trade.
Although RTD coffee in grocery stores is displayed alongside hot coffee, it could benefit from a different positioning. As it is caffeine-based, RTD coffee should appeal to a similar consumer base as energy drinks, maybe not those in search of a physical boost but those looking to enhance their mental capacity and alertness, for example students, drivers and night shift workers.
Nestlé Adriatic continued to dominate RTD coffee in Bosnia-Herzegovina in 2018, largely thanks to consumers recognising and trusting its Nescafé brand. To reinforce the positive association with its other coffee products, Nestlé rebranded its RTD coffee over the review period, replacing the original Xpress brand with Nescafé.
Z’bregov from Vindija was the only regional brand present in RTD coffee in 2018. This is positioned differently than rival brands as it can be found among refrigerated dairy-based products, and unlike Nescafé and other brands is packaged in small Tetra Pak cartons.
Unlike Nestlé, which is more of a hot drinks company, the second strongest player in RTD coffee in 2018 was another large international manufacturer, namely the soft drinks specialist Rauch Fruchtsäfte. The positioning of Rauch’s Cafemio brand is very similar to that of Nescafé, with it virtually shadowing the latter in both grocery chains and forecourt retailers.
