Younger Swedes tend to be more flexible with their consumption habits than their parents, being more willing to try out new products, especially those with a lower alcohol content thanks to increasing health awareness. Hence, extensions to spirits brands are attracting a growing consumer base.
The fastest growing category in 2017 was malt-based RTDs, followed by other RTDs, with both growing from a much lower base when compared with wine-based and spirit-based RTDs. Malt-based RTDs benefited from the launch of new products, such as Dufvenkrooks Julmust from Great Brands and India Pale Soda from Aktiebolaget Gbg Soda.
Sweden is witnessing a strong trend towards organic food and beverages, with this mainly being driven by increasing health-consciousness. The trend has also clearly reached RTDs.
Galatea Spirits became the new leader in RTDs/high-strength premixes in 2017. The company markets Smirnoff Ice and Maverick Sailor, with the former remaining the leading brand overall.
There were no private label RTDs/high-strength premixes available in 2017 as sales of alcoholic beverages are not allowed outside Systembolaget, other than beer with an ABV of up to 3.5% or cider/perry, wine or other drinks with an ABV of up to 2.
RTDs/high-strength premixes continued to be dominated by international manufacturers in 2017. Only one of the leading five global brand owners is local, namely Krönleins Bryggeri, which sells the Cid and Halmstad Crush wine-based RTDs.
