Executive Summary

Apr 2019
PROSPECTS
Positive outlook for sanitary protection

Sanitary protection is expected to continue to benefit from a number of long-term trends in Algeria over the forecast period. Ongoing urbanisation and the rise in the number of women in the workforce is resulting in women shifting from traditional cloth alternatives to sanitary protection.

Continued healthy growth projected for coming years

Sanitary protection will continue to post healthy growth over the forecast period. However, sales in the area will be somewhat limited by increasing maturity as a well as the impact of inflation on consumer purchasing power, with the Algerian economy suffering from the collapse in oil prices, which has fuelled a shift towards lower priced domestic economy brands.

Standard towels with wings to continue dominating sales

Despite the success of ultra-thin towels with wings, standard towels with wings will continue to dominate sales in sanitary protection, accounting for the overwhelming majority of volume and value sales. This product area will continue to benefit from the fact that many women equate extra bulk with extra protection, with producers struggling to change this perception.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Fabrication de Derives de Coton consolidates leadership

Domestic manufacturer Fabrication de Derives de Coton, which offers its popular Awane flagship brand, continued to lead sanitary protection in 2018. The company benefited from investing heavily in its Awane brand during the review period, improving its quality and range.

Local production gaining ground due to ban on imports of hygiene products

Domestic players’ share of sanitary protection sales has increased over the last three years due to declining purchasing power, with consumers becoming increasingly price sensitive and thus shifting to domestic standard and economic brands. Indeed, these consumers are more attracted by the low prices offered by domestic players, particularly as the quality and range of many domestic brands improved during the review period and distribution for these products broadened.

Always continues to lose sales share

Star Brands, the exclusive importer and distributer of Always, continues to lose sale share in Algeria. Although the company benefits from offering Procter & Gamble’s Always and Tampax brands, which have a strong reputation for quality, restrictions on imports have negatively impacted the company’s sales.
