Sales of sauces, dressings and condiments continue to benefit from the effects of COVID-19 on the Belarusian consumer base. Lockdown, ongoing sanitary measures that continue to limit access to foodservice and the sharp contraction of disposable incomes have all combined to increase the amount of home cooking, in turn driving demand for these products.
The pandemic has seen health eating trends strengthen in 2021, with consumers looking to reduce consumption of overly processed food where possible. This is, in turn, driving demand for ‘natural’ or healthier condiments, not only with less salt or sugar, for example, but also with bio positioning.
Soy sauce is set to see a decline in volume sales in 2021, the only part of the category to see this. The reason for this is the comparatively high price point of leading brands in the sector.
Belarusians are expected to start to cook less at home from 2022 and beyond. This is a result of the roll out of the vaccination programme, and a relaxation of pandemic measures that should see more people returning to work and study full time.
Producers and retailers are expected to widen their portfolios over the forecast period, and this greater segmentation should offer opportunity. Within ketchup and mayonnaise, for example, more light products are expected to be launched, as well as products aimed at children.
The competitive environment is set to become increasingly challenging over the forecast period. The pandemic favoured larger producers with strong distribution agreements with leading retailers, and as a result, 2021 has seen players like Nestlé SA grow share.
