Sauces, dressings and condiments are set to see strong growth in retail volume and value sales in 2020 as a result of the onset of COVID-19, although less spectacular than many other packaged food products in Colombia over the same period. The reasons for this growth in demand are broadly in line with other product trends.
Table sauces are set to see the strongest growth in 2020, largely because these are the sauces most typically consumed outside the home and will therefore benefit from the rise in numbers of consumers eating at home as a result of lockdown. However, evolving consumer habits are also helping to grow sales of table sauces, with many younger consumers using them as an ingredient in cooking rather than a condiment.
Unsurprisingly, consumer health awareness has accelerated rapidly in 2020 as result of the pandemic, and there is widespread understanding of the strong links between dietary health, weight control and better outcomes in the case of infection. As a result, many consumers are looking to change the way they eat, and sauces, dressings and condiments have been especially vulnerable to this strengthening consumer trend in 2020.
Health trends are likely to strengthen going forward, especially with the increase in concern created by the virus, and companies that are proactive in product development, or simply reformulating their product portfolios will see substantial opportunity going forward. Top five player Conservas Colombina SA - La Constancia, for example, aims to make all of its products free from colourants and artificial flavours, as well as rolling out more ‘natural’ products.
Consumer tastes are evolving in Colombia, and an increasingly sophisticated and affluent middle class is adopting new dietary trends. Demand for cooking sauces that meet demand for vegan, vegetarian or flexitarian diets is set to grow over the forecast period; more importantly, the consumers that are most likely to buy them are wealthier, and happy to pay for the higher price positions new products that fit this trend will hold.
The retail environment is changing in Colombia. Over the review period, there has been an ongoing shift from traditional local retailers to modern grocery chains, largely as a result of urbanisation and the fact that these players typically offer a wider range of products at cheaper prices.
