COVID-19 will lead to an acceleration in retail current value sales growth in sauces, dressings and condiments in Croatia during 2020. However, volume growth in retail sales will be smaller than the volume decline in foodservice sales in absolute terms, due to the severe impact of the pandemic on the local tourism industry.
During the review period, liquid stocks and fonds, chili sauces and barbecue sauces all saw significant growth in retail current value sales, albeit from a fairly low base in all three cases. Amid rising household disposable incomes and increased exposure to international cuisine in local restaurants, Croatian consumers increasingly sought out new and exotic table sauces.
Podravka dd remains the clear leader in sauces, dressings and condiments. In 2020, it launched Vegeta Natur, an extension of its popular Vegeta brand that consists of mixes of herbs and spices that are specifically formulated for certain foods, such as potatoes, chicken, fish, pork and salad.
Following a post-pandemic dip in 2021, growth in retail value sales of sauces, dressings and condiments is forecast remain fairly steady over the course of the forecast period. Having benefitted from stockpiling during the early stages of the pandemic, pickled products and, to a lesser extent, dips, will see a particularly sharp decline in retail current value sales growth in 2021, while retail current value sales of herbs and spices will be flat during the year.
The nature of Croatian cuisine is changing, and this will have a deepening effect on sauces, dressings and condiments over the course of the forecast period. For a long time, Croatian cuisine was resistant to external influences, with many consumers determined to preserve local cooking traditions and recipes.
The strong loyalty displayed by local consumers towards Podravka dd’s Vegeta brand makes it difficult for international rivals like Unilever Croatia doo, Mars Inc and Nestlé Adriatic doo to close the gap to it. In general, international players do not offer anything significantly different from their local rivals in sauces, dressings and condiments.
