Sauces, dressings and condiments hugely benefitted from the pandemic, as people cooked more at home due to lockdowns. In 2021, as society gradually opens up, current value and volume is expected to be lower, though value sales are still higher than in 2019, as there is still some cautiousness about eating out in restaurants, as COVID-19 still remains a threat.
Alicorp still holds a commanding lead in 2021, though it expected to lose slight value share. The company’s success is based on its strong distribution channels, wide product range and continued innovation and this continues in 2021, with the introduction of two new table sauces.
Private label continues to gain a foothold and offers the most popular type of table sauces such as mayonnaise and ketchup in particular. Some supermarkets have also branched out from the traditional private label ranges.
As society returns to normal over the forecast period, and the threat of COVID-19 reduces, sauces, dressings and condiments will register moderate value and volume growth. However, there will be certain opportunities for growth.
Mayonnaise is the most consumed table sauce in Peru and can be seen on most tables across households and restaurants. Alicorp leads mayonnaise and continues to expand its product ranges, including by launching light versions.
For many consumers, salad dressing is seen as unnecessary, with home-made dressings of lemon, salt and oil used by most Peruvians. Equally, the majority of Peruvians do not eat fresh salads on a regular basis, making the consumer base for packaged dressing products low.
