The category expects to record strong growth in retail volume and value sales in 2020, as consumers are eating more meals at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Foodservice closures and consumers’ reluctance to return to crowded foodservice outlets will, however, lead to sever losses in foodservice volume sales in 2020.
Private label is expected to increase its value shares in sauces, dressings and condiments in 2020, led by the discounter BIM Birlesik Magazacilik AS. Discounters are growing tremendously across the category by opening more outlets.
Many Turkish consumers do not know how to cook or prepare their own pasta sauces and, during 2020, as they are cooking more at home, they are expected to purchase higher quantities of pasta sauces. Growth in this category will be supported by the lack of foodservice outlets and the ease of preparing readymade pasta sauces at home in 2020.
The surge in volume sales in this category as a result of stockpiling and consumers spending more time at home is expected to subside at the beginning of the forecast period as consumers’ lives return to their usual routines. This will be reflected in the formats of products offered as larger packs available in 2020 will be less common in the coming years as the lack of stockpiling will reduce the need for larger pack sizes.
Sauces, dressings and condiments is expected to register strong volume sales in the forecast period, supported by the positive performances of the largest categories of the mature tomato pastes and purées which continues to grow because Turkish dishes are dependent on tomato paste, and table sauces. The latter is driven by increasing interest in exciting flavours such as chili sauce and barbecue sauce influenced by the popularity of Mexican cuisine in foodservice, encouraging consumers to purchase these products to replicate certain dishes at home.
Pickled products remained a strong category overall supported by the popularity of these products in Turkey, as they accompany a range of meats and different dishes. Pickled products will continue to show growth in the forecast period after some stagnation in the review period as companies have begun to invest in new launches and varieties of pickles that attracted consumers’ attention.
