Smokeless tobacco has negligible sales in Guatemala. Vapour products, however, is becoming the new trend in smoking and sales are quickly growing in Guatemala City, with several retailers seen in shopping centres and on social media websites such as Facebook.
The vapour products consumer base in Guatemala is growing stronger thanks to young adults in the upper income tier. The high unit prices of these products, which range from GTQ350 to GTQ900, do not allow for a large consumer base in a country where the majority of people are in lower income strata and cannot afford these products.
Open vaping systems are currently the most prevalent products available and account for the majority of sales. The flexibility that these products allow, in terms of flavour and combinations, appeals strongly to customers.
One of the first retailers to introduce vapour products to its portfolio has been Tabacos y Puros Finos SA, which has three kiosks in shopping centres located in Guatemala City and also sells through its website www.tabacosa.
Vapour products is in its initial growing phase in Guatemala and new retailers are being seen, both in shopping centres and on the internet. Among the strongest new product launches have been IQOS, the first heated tobacco device from Tabacalera Centroamericana SA.
The dominant retailing channel for vapour products is non-grocery specialists, with sales being generated in shopping centres. Stores that used to specialise in cigarettes, cigars and cigarillos were the first to increase their product portfolios and include vapour products.
