Vapour products continued to register growth in 2017, as it is still a relatively new category in Hong Kong. The population of regular smokers in Hong Kong has declined over the years; however, the use of electronic smoking devices is on a strong rising trend, according to latest government figures. A survey conducted in 2016 at Baptist University and commissioned by the Hong Kong Council on Smoking and Health (COSH) concluded that e-cigarettes contained one million times more cancer-causing substances than outdoor air after tests on 13 brands.
Vapour products had a negligible presence in Hong Kong in the early review period, but underwent significant expansion towards the end of the review period, driven by wider distribution and availability of brands. More people are smoking vapour products, with 90% being males.
International Vapor Group, Halo Cigs and Hookah Hutt account for more than three quarters of retail value sales of vapour products in Hong Kong. However, outside of the main players, vapour products remained relatively fragmented in 2017, with many products not even bearing a visible brand.
Hong Kong consumers continue to view vapour products as young and trendy products, which they deem to be less harmful than cigarettes and other tobacco products. However, the health community is more concerned, as they view these vapour products as likely to contain dangerous ingredients, which might be undetected, given the lack of regulation.
Open vaping systems dominates vapour products, due to a relatively large distribution network, including vape cafés. Whilst cig-a-likes are available in Hong Kong, they are mainly sold through convenience stores.
