Smokeless tobacco, particularly nasal snuff, has been used for a long time in Nigeria, but usually only in an unpackaged, unbranded format. However, sales of branded, packaged formats of smokeless tobacco have been growing from a low base as companies have begun to market high-quality branded products.
Vapour products are quite novel in Nigeria, having only become significant in 2013. They are therefore a trendy, sophisticated product, particularly amongst middle- to upper-income consumers that are not deterred by their relatively high prices.
A potential threat to growth would be if legislation is directed at smokeless tobacco and vapour products which enforces increased taxation, making prices increase beyond what consumers can afford. Most consumers of smokeless tobacco are lower- to middle-income consumers, so they are not likely to react positively to price increases, whilst consumers of vapour products are generally middle- to upper-income consumers that can absorb some price increases, but not a radical increase.
Black Horse Tobacco dominates smokeless tobacco in Nigeria thanks to the longstanding presence in Nigeria of its Radford Snuff brand, which is affordably priced and well distributed. The brand benefited from the absence of higher-priced brands in 2016 when depreciation of the local currency led such brands to be too expensive to be imported.
Vapour products is led by eCigs Solutions, which markets the TyCigs brand. Being largely a cig-a-like product, it is relatively affordable.
All companies present in both smokeless tobacco and vapour products are international players. Vapour products imported to Nigeria come largely from Europe, particularly the UK, and from China.
