Smokeless tobacco remains a very small category within tobacco in South Africa. The most popular form of smokeless tobacco is snuff, particularly dry snuff. Traditionally, the core consumer group for snuff is black women, predominantly those living in rural areas. Packaged snuff offered under brands such as Magnet is purchased in small plastic containers. Otherwise, consumers make their own snuff, known as kambuti, by purchasing and grinding tobacco leaf.
Leonard Dingler Pty Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Philip Morris International, maintained the dominant position and highest volume share of 86% in smokeless tobacco in 2015. In 2009, Philip Morris International acquired Swedish Match South Africa (Pty) Ltd and this deal included Leonard Dingler, which was previously a wholly-owned subsidiary of Swedish Match. Its smokeless tobacco brands in South Africa include Taxi and Magnet. MLP Distributors CC ranked second in the category in 2015 with a 3% volume share through its Ntsu brand, while Swedish Match South Africa (Proprietary) Ltd ranked third with 2% through its Taxi brand.
