Smoking the water pipes known as shisha remains relatively popular in Algeria and the country has the highest overall value and volume sales of pipe tobacco of any country in North Africa, with the exception of Egypt. Shisha smoking retains a strong presence in the country as sharing a shisha pipe is considered to be a social activity which is undertaken both at home and public places. Shisha is purchased both in on-trade establishments and from shops which specialise in shisha paraphernalia. Shisha smoking is most popular among younger male consumers, many of whom enjoy the opportunity to try new tobacco flavours. Around half of those who choose to smoke shisha will already be consumers of other tobacco products. It is hard to ascertain the number of female shisha pipe smokers in Algeria as many women confine this activity to the privacy of their own homes.
The leading brand in smoking tobacco in Algeria remains the United Arab Emirates-based Al Fakher water pipe tobacco brand. Al Fakher offers a wide range of smoking tobacco in numerous different flavours. Other players such as Al Nakhla are also present in the category, as are other smaller brands from across the Middle East, although there is no domestic production of pipe tobacco in the country.
Smoking tobacco is expected to continue growing over the forecast period, increasing in volume at a CAGR of 3% due to the growing consumer base for pipe tobacco for shisha water pipes, which is expected to continue boosting demand for new flavours. However, it is not expected that water pipe tobacco will be able to attract high numbers of Algerian smokers away from cigarettes as it is not expected that it will become more fashionable to smoke water pipe tobacco in Algeria, moreover, smoking a shisha pipe is also less convenient than smoking cigarettes.
