Due to the substantial increase in the unit price of tobacco products in Australia, many smokers are turning to cheaper alternatives, such as RYO tobacco. As a result, smoking tobacco recorded the strongest performance within tobacco in 2015, driven by the growth of RYO tobacco, and was the only category to achieve a retail volume rise.
Multinational players led sales of smoking tobacco in 2015. The two leading players, Imperial Tobacco Australia and British American Tobacco Australia represented 91% of retail volume sales in 2015. Scandinavian Tobacco Group ranked third in 2015, accounting for a marginal share in the category owing to its pipe tobacco brand, Borkum Riff.
