Roll-your-own (RYO) tobacco can be traced back to the beginning of the Philippines’ tobacco culture. The Spanish brought tobacco to the Philippines and as the industry grew, the older population simply rolled tobacco leaves to smoke. Pipe smoking in the Philippines, however, was picked up from Japanese traders and from the Taiwanese who brought in Dutch pipes. Pipe smoking is still limited to the upper echelons of society.
During the review period, the category was dominated by imported brands of rolling tobacco and pipe tobacco. Brands that are available in a limited quantity are Amber Leaf, BlackStone, Borkum Riff, Captain Black, Golden Virginia and Mac Baren. Smoking tobacco remains fragmented in terms of its distribution.
