Water pipes or “shisha” became very popular in Tunisia in recent years and during 2015 when this became an important trend. All brands were widely available through the majority of cafés where high quality was offered but not legally as these products are not allowed to be sold in Tunisia. Until the end of the review period, the only product sold in Tunisia is Maassel Chikh El Baled and Maassel kif by RNTA (the company which monopolises tobacco in the country). The continuous decline in volume was affected directly by the important increase in illicit trade during recent years.
Régie Nationale des Tabacs et des Allumettes (RNTA) remained the only significant player in smoking tobacco in 2015, accounting for a 95% total retail volume share. The company still offers one pipe tobacco brand, Yasmine. In addition, it owns the distribution of Maassel Chikh El Baled and Maasel kif which are sold in small quantities in recent years because of the high competition by the parallel market.
