While the COVID-19 crisis has seen the demand for convenient meal options and non-perishable products suitable for stockpiling surge, soup has not been a major beneficiary. While it should be noted that the category’s rate of volume decline was lower in 2020 than in the previous year, in 2021, soup is expected to see the strongest fall in year-on-year volume sales of the review period.
The competitive landscape in soup in Colombia remains unchanged and is led by Nestlé with its Maggi brand, Quala with La Sopera and Hogareña, and Unilever with Knorr. Innovations in the category have not had a significant impact on demand.
The COVID-19 crisis has led consumer foodservice operators to develop new alternatives to be able to reach consumers in their homes during lockdowns and maintain some level of sales. While restrictions have been eased in 2021, restaurants continue to offer specific delivery menus, with packaged chilled soups included, in single or double portions.
The outlook for soup, both the shelf stable and dehydrated soup categories (the only ones to register a significant presence in the Colombian market) are not positive for the forecast period. This is explained by the changing habits of most Colombian consumers, who are not including soup amongst their regular daily meal options.
There are few major players in soup in the Colombian market, with Nestlé (Maggi), Quala (La Sopera and Hogareña) and Unilever (Knorr) holding the largest shares and private label remaining a minor presence despite the development of the discounters channel in modern grocery retailing. In contrast with other packaged food categories, consumers of soup are loyal to brands, which have been able to appeal to consumers across a range of budgets.
Chilled soup has a negligible presence in the Colombian market and the category is not expected to see further development in the retail channel during the forecast period. The chilled soup that foodservice operators added to their offers during the COVID-19 crisis is expected to continue to display a positive performance, although, due to its high prices, it will remain orientated towards high-income consumers.
