In 2021, Nestlé Dominicana continued to lead soup with its Maggi brand, ahead of Unilever Caribe SA’s Knorr. Between them, these two brands accounted by almost three quarters of retail value sales in 2021.
Even before the onset of the pandemic, private label was growing in popularity in soup, and the economic shock of the pandemic has served to accelerate this trend by making many local consumers more price sensitive. Meanwhile, the private label offering is widening: During mid-2020, Supermarket Nacional entered the soup category with its Lider private label.
Retail volume sales of soup will exhibit only marginal growth during the forecast period as a whole. Growth in retail current value sales will be largely driven by rising unit price.
Private label will continue to grow in importance in soup during the forecast period. Local consumers are becoming more familiar with private label in general, and retail chains are both expanding their private label offer and allocating more shelf space to these products.
E-commerce emerged as a small, but significant, distribution channel for soup during 2020 and continued to expand in 2021, with players like Envasadora Vizcaya CA working with such on-demand delivery services as Glovo, Hugo, Uber and PedidosYa. Urban consumers can now order soup via their smartphones and pay with a card or cash on delivery.
