Having surged during 2020, as foodservice outlets were closed for an extended period, consumers prepared more meals at home and some stockpiled products with a long shelf life, retail volume sales of soup declined during 2021, as COVID-19 restrictions were eased. However, retail volume sales remained well above their pre-pandemic (2019) level.
Most of the dehydrated soup that is sold in Egypt is imported, with Nestlé’s Maggi and Bestfoods Egypt’s Knorr dominant. Between them, these two brands accounted for just over three quarters of retail value sales of soup in Egypt during 2021.
Having increased sharply during the early part of the review period, as the devaluation of the Egyptian pound led to a sharp rise in import costs, soup manufacturers only introduced moderate price increases during 2021, mindful of an economic shock that had made many local consumers more price sensitive. Indeed, the unit price of soup rose at its slowest rate in five years during 2021, in spite of a sharp increase in raw material costs.
Retail volume sales of soup will exhibit moderate growth during the forecast period as a whole. However, demand will continue to be limited by the fact that it will remain unaffordable to low-income consumers.
Another factor that will inhibit the development of soup in Egypt is that category sales are likely to remain highly seasonal. Demand tends to spike during the holy month of Ramadan, when a bowl of soup is regarded as the ideal way to begin iftar, the evening meal taken at sundown to break the daily fast.
Having lost retail value share in soup during the latter part of the review period after the onset of the pandemic, modern grocery retailers are likely to start to grow again during the forecast period. The modernisation of the country’s retail infrastructure will be the main driver of this, as banners like Carrefour aggressively expand, bringing supermarkets, hypermarkets and convenience stores to more urban neighbourhoods, squeezing independent small grocers.
