Overall, soup is expected to see only marginal-to-slight growth in retail volume sales over 2021. This is partly because of the spike in growth recorded in 2020 due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis.
Although there was not a strong rise in the number of products available in soup towards the end of the review period, there is a growing demand for packaged products. This has generated investment in new product development featuring soup in 2021.
The leading distribution channel for soup is set to remain independent small grocers in 2021, although it continues to be challenged by modern grocery retailers. Following a slight rebound in 2020, as some consumers looked to shop close to home during the pandemic, independent small grocers is predicted to see a return to its general downward trend in retail value share in 2021.
Instant soup is expected to continue to gain retail volume and value (constant 2021 prices) sales from dehydrated soup over the forecast period. This is partly because instant soup is a smaller and less mature category than dehydrated soup.
Dehydrated soup is increasingly losing favour with Serbian customers, who are looking for healthier and more natural products when it comes to nutrition. As such, brand owners in dehydrated soup are expected to respond to health and wellness trends by increasing the number of products with claims of natural ingredients and no additives in order to stem the shift to instant soup.
Foodservice saw a slump in volume sales in 2020 due to COVID-19-related outlet closures. While the easing of COVID-19 restrictions has helped foodservice to begin its recovery in 2021, a return to the 2019 volume sales level is not anticipated until 2025.
