The strong current value growth expected for dehydrated soup in 2021 is in large part due to the increase in home cooking, which continued into 2021. These soups appeal to many consumers because of their versatility, since they can be used to flavour dishes such as stews and casseroles without the need to buy many different herbs and spices.
Historically, the uptake of shelf-stable soup was very low, mainly because of low consumer awareness and strong competition from dehydrated soup and chilled soup. However, during 2020 Woolworths extensively expanded its private label offering of shelf-stable soup to include several options, from budget to high-end.
Chilled soup and instant soup are expected to see strong declines in retail volume terms in 2021, mainly driven by lower consumer demand and affordability constraints. Following the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown, consumers continued to cook more at home, decreasing the demand for convenient ready to eat options such as chilled and instant soup.
The global pandemic saw more consumers cooking at home out of pure necessity. Cooking at home is more affordable compared with buying ready meals or takeaway.
Thanks to innovation and the renewed image of shelf-stable soup, demand is expected to continue to increase over the forecast period. The COVID-19 pandemic brought about changes in consumers’ shopping behaviour, especially amongst middle- to high-income consumers.
Globally, young adults are the key consumers of plant-based foods, including in South Africa. South Africa ranked amongst the top five countries that ordered the most vegan dishes, according to UberEats, with vegan burgers reported as the most popular choice.
