2020 saw significant growth in shelf-stable soup, due to the ease of storage of these products. Such products were stockpiled during the repeated lockdown periods due to COVID-19.
Chilled soup did not see a strong sales increase during the pandemic in 2020 in the same way that shelf-stable soup did, and in fact saw a strong slowdown in growth as consumers turned to other formats offering better storage. Although growth is set to pick up again slightly from 2021, growth rates are not expected to return to the pre-pandemic level.
Shelf-stable soup brands Crosse & Blackwell and Baxters have been expanding their ranges, offering new ingredients such as sweet potato, quinoa and butternut squash, which raise their soup offerings to a more premium level. Besides, for Crosse & Blackwell, its success is also coming from its highlighted use of British ingredients.
In the forecast period, chilled soup is set to experience the highest retail current value and volume growth across the different types of soup. Building on its strong historic performance, the category will benefit from the returning preference of British consumers for fresh, chilled meal items.
A trend expected to keep sustaining growth in soup in the forecast period is sustainability. Several angles play towards this, such as helping reducing food waste, reducing the environmental impact of transport, or reducing the use of fertilisers.
Distribution channels are expected to remain traditional for soup, with supermarkets and hypermarkets continuing to dominate over the forecast period. Although e-commerce should continue to challenge these established channels, as it enables economies of scale and a wider portfolio of available brands, for now logistics remains the main factor hampering the profitability of delivering such goods.
