Packaged soup products remain a niche in Tunisia, occupying very limited shelf space even in modern grocery. When available, these products are mainly found in urban supermarkets and hypermarkets, and are predominantly consumed by higher income consumer groups.
The economic impact of the pandemic has seen most households suffer a decline in purchasing power. Tunisians continue to reduced spending on non-essential products like soup, which have historically been consumed by a very small population segment.
As the pandemic lingers through 2021, making consumers reluctant to visit foodservice outlets, Tunisians are choosing to cook more at home rather than purchase packaged options from retail. Therefore, dehydrated soup is losing out to traditional soup made from fresh ingredients, and will not show any retail volume growth in 2021.
Currently, all packaged soup brands available in Tunisia are imported, with the category mainly being represented by expensive foreign products. With the Tunisian dinar expected to depreciate further over the coming years, the price of imported soup brands will rise further, making value development and volume sales harder to achieve.
Over the forecast period, potential new players are expected to enter the category, and will target mainly upper-income consumers, soup’s main consumer group. The long-term objective will consist of making soup more affordable by reducing costs to target other consumer groups, but without the evolution of domestic production this will be a challenge.
Soup will continue to benefit from the development of modern grocery retail channels such as supermarkets and hypermarkets in urban areas. These outlets are beginning to make dehydrated soup more visible on shelves, a trend that is expected to continue over the forecast period.
