The first chilled soup was launched in Ukraine in November 2020 by Kastryulka in the convenience stores Kolo and e-commerce platform Cooker in six taste variants. Local restauranteur, Dima Borysov, also entered Kolo with a range of ready meals and soup in February 2021.
Dehydrated soup sees negative retail value sales growth in 2021 but instant soup sees moderate growth. Nonetheless, dehydrated soup benefits from well-known local brands such as Tiotia Sonia (Odessa kharcho kombinat VAT) and Lasochka (Oleksiivskiy Kombinat Prodtovariv PP) which are attractively priced.
During 2021 small premium soup players such as Street Soup and Bønner increased their shelf presence in modern grocery retailers significantly. These brands are more expensive than the large players as they are positioned as being healthy with high protein, gluten free, natural, with no preservatives and vegan.
Shelf stable soup is likely to gain popularity during the forecast period due to its time saving nature and its convenience. Furthermore, consumers are becoming increasingly aware of shelf stable soup and its more readily available.
Ukrainians’ taste is maturing and becoming more sophisticated. Consequently, soup that has the same exotic taste as in foodservice is likely to become more readily available in retail during the forecast period.
Packaged instant and dehydrated soup is perceived as being unnatural, full of preservatives and targeted mostly at lower-income consumers. Consequently, health and wellness instant and dehydrated soup is likely to remain niche during the forecast period.
