One of the most interesting trends within sports nutrition at the end of the review period has been that the barrier between sports nutrition and vitamins and dietary supplements has become increasingly blurred. This is being partially driven by a greater focus on the use of sports nutrition as part of a healthy lifestyle.
The Russian sports nutrition market is still in a period of development and consequently it continues to record strong growth in 2021 despite the economic impact of COVID-19 and declining disposable incomes. E-commerce has been a strong growth driver since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic with access to store-based retailers being disrupted.
Protein/energy bars remains the most dynamic category within sport nutrition in 2021. These products are seeing strong demand not only from those who take part in sport and fitness, but also from other people who are interested in health and wellness, weight management and wellbeing.
Sports nutrition is a category in the relatively early stages of development, with its target audience gradually expanding beyond sports professionals and bodybuilders to reach a wider audience of people focused on health and wellness. As such, there is still seen to be plenty of room for development, with younger consumers in particular becoming increasingly image conscious.
It is expected that consumers’ product awareness regarding sport nutrition will continue to grow over the forecast period thanks to the growing access to information on the internet. E-commerce and digital marketing could also lead to even greater fragmentation in sports nutrition, with digital channels helping players to reach a wider audience without needing to secure shelf space in retailers.
Sales of sports nutrition through e-commerce will likely continue to grow over the forecast period. The simplification of logistics, introduction of new pick-up points and the establishment of new storage warehouses in more regions should all contribute to the growth of e-commerce in sport nutrition.

Sports nutrition is targeted at serious athletes and gym-goers, and their principal purpose is to build muscle and to boost energy. Sports Nutrition tracks two types of products: Protein and Non-Protein. Sports protein include bars, powder and ready-to-drink (RTD) offerings. Sports Non-Protein include products that do not have protein as its core ingredient. They can be used to repair muscle or as energy/endurance booster. Note: Mainstream sports nutrition products such as sports drinks (e.g. Gatorade) or energy drinks (e.g. Red Bull) are not included here. Energy and sports drinks are tracked in the Soft Drinks system.
