In October 2022, following an Environment Ministers’ Meeting, Australian ministers agreed to reform the country’s packaging regulations by 2025, and set the target for all packaging in the country to be designed to be recovered, reused, recycled and reprocessed safely, in line with circular economy principles. Enforced by the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO), the country has four packaging sustainability goals to achieve by 2025 – for 100% of packaging to be reusable, recyclable or compostable; for 70% of plastic packaging to be recycled or composted; for 50% of average recycled content included in packaging; and a phase-out of problematic and unnecessary single-use plastic packaging.
Sweet spreads packaging unit volumes are expected to decline over the forecast period, with key pack types like PET jars, PET bottles and glass jars also seeing falling unit volumes. There is, however, scope for growth in niche pack types in sweet spreads as players seek differentiation on store shelves and to expand usage occasions, even as overall packaging units decline.
