While mid-size packs dominated the packaging of sweet spreads in Mexico in 2022, economic uncertainty and pressures on household incomes heading into 2023 are dampening demand for sweet spreads, as these products are typically considered discretionary purchases. As such, local consumers are likely to reduce their sweet spreads purchases by buying smaller packs and treating them as more of an indulgence.
While rigid plastic in the form of PET bottles and PET jars accounted for the majority of pack type share in honey, glass jars continued to dominate the packaging of other sweet spreads categories. In jams and preserves in particular, brands are increasingly opting to package their products in squeezable PET bottles.
