The reactivation of social occasions and entertainment occasions helped street stalls/kiosks to experience some recuperation over 2021, helped along by increased spending by consumers who enjoyed cash liquidity on the back of three pension fund withdrawals and continued government monetary aid. Foot traffic steadily increased over the course of the year, as office workers and students returned in greater numbers to work and education at all levels.
Fixed street stalls/kiosks had better opportunities to create an online delivery service during 2020 and 2021, and as such, many continued partnering with last-mile delivery apps. The number of kiosks present on delivery services greatly expanded, with those present in shopping centres also offering delivery services as a way of maintaining sales even as foot traffic increased.
While the early forecast period will be a time of recovery for street stalls/kiosks, a return to the 2019 level of value sales in this small channel will be a gradual development, taking longer than for other larger consumer foodservice channels in the Chilean landscape. While the reopening of the country, aligned to the Paso a Paso programme, has allowed for limited capacity in various public places, consumers’ careful spending will impact sales in the coming years, with the economic recession stifling growth and other social and political developments driving an increase in cautious spending amongst consumers.

Street Stalls/Kiosks
Small, sometimes mobile, foodservice providers characterised by a limited product offering and by low prices. Includes street stalls, street hawkers and foodservice kiosks where food is prepared in some way and served through a hatch or over a display counter to take away. Also includes kiosks and carts located externally or internally eg in shopping malls etc. As a rule, street stalls/kiosks outlets tend to be smaller than 100% home delivery/takeaway outlets, while menus are more limited, often (though certainly not always) with a greater emphasis on snack items, rather than full meals.
