After registering slow current value growth in 2020, despite the disturbance from COVID-19, street stalls/kiosks achieved more dynamic growth in 2021, mainly driven by the continuing growth of tea chains. Leading tea chains such as MXBC, Shuyi and Chabaidao aggressively expanded their outlet numbers, particularly in lower-tier cities.
As tea drinks from street stalls are ordered with high frequency – it is not rare to hear about some young people consuming tea drinks every day – chained street stalls are competing fiercely to develop new flavours and mixes to constantly attract customers, who might get bored of having the same drinks all the time. The previous competition usually went in two directions – fruit flavours and add-ons.
Brands in street stalls/kiosks, especially tea stalls, have started to be aware of the importance of supply chains, and many of them have started to take more control of the upstream, such as building their own tea plantations. MXBC has taken this strategy to the extreme.
After a few years of rapid growth, tea street stalls/kiosks has become saturated, with players competing intensely. In terms of price, high-end and mid-market chains with a price range of RMB15 and higher are the main competitors in high-tier cities, while lower-tier cities and small towns have been crowded with stalls with a price range of RMB10 and lower.
Street snacks such as fried strings and breakfast stalls used to be run mostly by independent vendors across the country. However, more chained brands emerged as consumer foodservice gradually recovered from the COVID-19 hit in 2020 and grew quickly in 2021.
Baozhuan Night Bun – a chain selling buns from the afternoon to midnight – has expanded rapidly since the summer of 2021. The brand opened around 100 outlets in four months in various cities.

Street Stalls/Kiosks
Small, sometimes mobile, foodservice providers characterised by a limited product offering and by low prices. Includes street stalls, street hawkers and foodservice kiosks where food is prepared in some way and served through a hatch or over a display counter to take away. Also includes kiosks and carts located externally or internally eg in shopping malls etc. As a rule, street stalls/kiosks outlets tend to be smaller than 100% home delivery/takeaway outlets, while menus are more limited, often (though certainly not always) with a greater emphasis on snack items, rather than full meals.
