During the COVID-19 pandemic, street stalls/kiosks recorded a heavy negative impact from the COVID-19 pandemic as the number of outlets fell considerably and chained and independent street stalls/kiosks both recorded a dramatic decline in foodservice value sales and the number of transactions as footfall declined. Although both chained and independent street stalls/kiosks were affected by the COVID-19 lockdown periods, independent street stalls/kiosks, such as street-side tea and coffee peddlers and food trucks posted a higher rate of outlet losses.
As street stalls/kiosks are designed primarily with takeaway sales in mind, there was virtually no change in the format of sales in this category during the COVID-19 pandemic. The only effect of the COVID-19 pandemic was a slight growth, albeit from an extremely low base, of home delivery options as companies attempted to reach consumers who stayed at home during the COVID-19 crisis.
Barn’s by Al Amjaad Establishment remained one of the leading players in the channel in 2021. The brand is supported by a high level of customer loyalty in Saudi Arabia, especially among young and affluent middle- and upper-income consumers in Saudi Arabia.
Street stalls/kiosks is set to continue to see a normalisation of value sales and transactions as consumer lifestyles return to normal and business picks up. By the end of the forecast period, however, chained street stalls/kiosks will be closer to matching their pre-COVID-19 foodservice value sales than independent street stalls/kiosks.
In 2021 and beyond it is expected that Kyan Café and Amjaad Establishment’s Barn’s will continue to lead in street stalls/kiosks as they continue to expand, opening a number of new outlets and reaching into the smaller cities of the Kingdom. Barn’s is also experimenting with its new brand of specialist coffee and tea shops called Barn’s X, the first outlet of which opened in Jeddah in 2020 with plans to expand if the concept proves successful.
Street stall/kiosk operators mainly serve drinks as their main commodity. However, as the category develops and expands across the country, many players are starting to offer more food variety to serve different customer groups.

Street Stalls/Kiosks
Small, sometimes mobile, foodservice providers characterised by a limited product offering and by low prices. Includes street stalls, street hawkers and foodservice kiosks where food is prepared in some way and served through a hatch or over a display counter to take away. Also includes kiosks and carts located externally or internally eg in shopping malls etc. As a rule, street stalls/kiosks outlets tend to be smaller than 100% home delivery/takeaway outlets, while menus are more limited, often (though certainly not always) with a greater emphasis on snack items, rather than full meals.
