Street stalls/kiosks remains a highly fragmented category populated by a large number of independent operators. Indeed, the top three brands in Thailand jointly accounted for only 8% of total value sales in 2021.
With full-service restaurants players exploring new formats and services in an effort to mitigate the dramatic negative impact of the COVID-19 crisis on dine-in sales, street stalls/kiosks operators have faced growing competition. For example, Sizzler has expanded its offer to include more smaller outlets, called Sizzler-To-Go.
The COVID-19 crisis has had a lower impact on sales of food in street stalls/kiosks than in other categories because most of the leading chained vendors had already partnered with delivery service providers. During lockdown, Thai consumers were able to order food for home delivery from well-known vendors such as 5 Star Chicken and Chysee Bamee Kiew.
Street stalls/kiosks is expected to see a gradual recovery along with the return of inbound tourism, with foreign visitors comprising a key consumer group for the channel, and the revival of foot traffic in shopping centres and markets, which constitute important locations for street stalls/kiosks operators.
Some TV channels and Facebook pages have tried to support the sales of local street stalls/kiosks by posting their locations and food offer online to raise awareness amongst Thai consumers and generate support for them. Facebook pages include Talad Nad Somwang.
During the forecast period, street stall owners are set to continue to partner with food delivery companies in order to meet the strong demand for home delivery services, which is expected to remain even once consumers return to hectic lifestyles with a greater away-from-home orientation, as they have become familiar with having food delivered and have come to appreciate its convenience. Indeed, the convenience factor is likely to become even more significant as consumers resume busy modern lifestyles.

Street Stalls/Kiosks
Small, sometimes mobile, foodservice providers characterised by a limited product offering and by low prices. Includes street stalls, street hawkers and foodservice kiosks where food is prepared in some way and served through a hatch or over a display counter to take away. Also includes kiosks and carts located externally or internally eg in shopping malls etc. As a rule, street stalls/kiosks outlets tend to be smaller than 100% home delivery/takeaway outlets, while menus are more limited, often (though certainly not always) with a greater emphasis on snack items, rather than full meals.
