Traditionally sugar confectionery has been one of the most important snack ranges. Over time and particularly over the review period, sugar confectionery has become saturated and its future per capita growth potential remains low.
In a bid to counter the negative image which sugar confectionery has gained amidst the growing importance of health and wellness, leading sugar manufacturers have resorted to the use of artificial sweeteners or other sweetening alternatives (most notably stevia) for their products in order to make them more attractive to these growing groups of health-conscious consumers who tend to count each and every calorie, yet they still crave some sweetness in their lives. Interestingly enough, some of the sugar confectionery products sweetened with stevia are so well manufactured that one can hardly make a distinction between a candy or a boiled sweet sweetened with sugar vs the one sweetened with stevia.
In 2018 in value terms, other sugar confectionery as a single range still dominates the total value sales in sugar confectionery. This category includes traditional products such as lokum (Turkish delight), alva (halva), sugarised crumbs used in cake decoration, cake icing and pastry preparation.
In 2018, Kraskomerc dooel, the local subsidiary of the Croatian food manufacturing company Kraš dd, leads sugar confectionery in Macedonia with a moderately declining value share as a result of the strong competitive pressure coming from both international and domestic manufacturers. The persuasive category lead and overall share of Kraskomerc dooel derives from the strength of its diverse sugar confectionery brand portfolio, led by the Bronhi, Kiki, 505 s Crtom, Pepermint and other Kraš brands.
The domestic Evropa ad ranks second in sugar confectionery in 2018 with a moderately declining value share. The main strength of Evropa ad derives from its competitively-priced sugar confectionery brands, such as Hazelnut Toffee, Zelena Menta, Colorado and Bonny Bon.
The remainder of the category is a competition field for a number of smaller international and regional players. Leading the group is the Slovenian company Zito Sumi doo and the Croatian companies Atlantic Grupa dd and Aquarius Grupa doo.
