Surface care was one of the main beneficiaries of the pandemic in home care in Russia. The outbreak of COVID-19 resulted in elevated hygiene consciousness among consumers globally, and Russia was no exception.
Task-specific cleaners, eg for the bathroom, kitchen or oven, also tended to perform better in 2020 and 2021, perhaps due to home seclusion – which gave consumers them more time to spend on such tasks, but also with a view to ensuring a pleasant (and clean) home environment, if spending more time there. Kitchen cleaners have also been benefiting from a switch to more specialised kitchen cleaners, with special products for cleaning grills, interior stone care or glass-ceramic.
Surface care continues to be dominated by the major multinationals, such as Procter & Gamble, Unilever or Henkel. However, these companies were generally losing share over the review period.
Sales of surface care will “calm down” after the growth spikes seen in 2020 and 2021, at the height of the pandemic. However, positive growth is expected throughout the forecast period in both volume and value terms.
Multipurpose cleaners, as the biggest and most dynamic category (excluding wipes), will be driving the overall surface care performance over the forecast period. Price-sensitive consumers are having to make careful decisions with regard to surface care product purchases, tending to look for the most economic options.
The extremely dynamic growth recorded by home care disinfectants in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic first hit Russia, is expected to prove to be a one-off. While sales in current value terms were still growing in 2021, they will tip into decline from 2022.
