Global probiotic yoghurt sales are set for another five years of strong growth, with a CAGR of 7% forecast between 2015 and 2020. Whilst drinking yoghurt will be key to that growth in absolute terms, the buoyant 85% rise in plain probiotic yoghurt will still be expected. Several key markets are set to see declines, though.
China will dominate growth in probiotic yoghurt between 2015 and 2020, with an increase of US$9.9 billion, while probiotic supplements in the US are set to rise by US$1 billion, and previously underperforming Japan will recover. Supplements are forecast to outperform yoghurt in absolute value terms in a number of key markets.
Regulatory changes in the area of health claims have a strong impact on market performance. The EU probiotic claims ban is predicted to contribute to a revenue loss for probiotic yoghurt of around €2.5 billion between 2012 and 2020.
Despite the lack of approved health claims beyond these broadly relating to digestion, probiotics undergo numerous studies and clinical trials, opening up further areas for development, including infant health and antimicrobial resistance.
