Key Findings

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) has exposed the fragility of the travel and tourism sector globally – with a distressing economic impact on the cities with the halt of the travel sector, social distancing, changes in social mobility and lifestyle changes. Setting in a new perspective, cities are now looking ahead for a sustainable recovery plan.

Euromonitor International’s city arrivals research covers over 400 cities and, every year, Euromonitor International publishes the Top 100 City Destinations, with the aim to highlight the most visited cities, featuring the movers and shakers in city tourism globally.

However, in the face of COVID-19, there are no winners or losers in 2020 as the pandemic has impacted all city destinations equally.

Thus, the 2020 edition will continue to feature the Top 100 City Destinations rankings for 2019, along with projected growth ranges and rank movements for 2020, focusing on directional trends due to a highly fluid situation.

Dipping into our extensive global research, we aim to showcase how cities are rising to the challenge, adapting their strategies to find new source markets, leverage digital innovation and embrace sustainability to chart a path towards recovery and build long-term resilience.
