Travel in
Algeria

Country Report

Executive Summary

Sep 2019
Strong development continues due to investment in infrastructure

Algeria’s travel industry continues to develop strongly and this is due mainly to strong investment in travel and tourism infrastructure from both the public and private sectors. The Government of Algeria is currently in the midst of the redevelopment of Houari Boumediene International Airport.

Rising internet penetration and expansion of online intermediaries to spur growth

Online travel intermediaries remained a small category in 2019 and this is mainly due to low internet penetration and the limited trust that most Algerians are prepared to place in online transactions. Nevertheless, strong growth is being recorded in online travel intermediaries and this is due to the buoyant growth being seen in the numbers of Algerians who have regular access to the internet, either through their home broadband connections or through their mobile devices.

International hotel companies develop their operations in Algeria

The most noteworthy commercial activity in Algeria’s travel and tourism industry towards the end of the review period was seen in lodging, where numerous international hotel companies continued to build and open new hotels in Algiers. This is part of the significant investment that is being seen in Algeria’s travel industry in general.

Lack of innovation tied to low online development and traditional consumer habits

The Algerian travel industry remains underdeveloped and there was a distinct lack of innovative new business models seen in the industry in 2019. This can be attributed mainly to the underdeveloped online culture, which means that consumers interact with their travel and tourism offerings much less often than their counterparts in more developed countries.

The only way is up for Algeria’s travel industry

Algeria’s travel and tourism industry maintains very strong growth potential and over the forecast period this is expected to translate into strong growth in all categories. Tourism flows are slated for increases in inbound, outbound and domestic terms as the inevitable resolution of the current political uncertainty and eventual increase in global oil and gas prices will underpin increasing interest in traveling to the country on the part of foreigners and a strong surge in interest in domestic and outbound travel among the country’s residents.
