COVID-19 is expected to decimate travel in 2020, with many flights suspended and only a trickle of travellers staying in lodgings. Whereas many countries registered an uplift in tourism during the summer months, this did not happen in Azerbaijan, as infection rates remained high and several strict lockdown measures remained in place.
On 24 March, the country went into quarantine, before closing its borders and going into complete lockdown on 5 April. Borders had previously been closed in part, with cross-border movement with Turkey stopping on 15 March and three days later with Russia.
Prices of flights in and out of Azerbaijan are relatively high and there is limited choice of direct flights. However, there was a strong expansion of the route network of Azerbaijan’s government-owned flagship national airline Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) during 2019.
While globally online intermediaries have been seeing strong value growth over the review period, low broadband penetration in Azerbaijan is slowing the shift to online platforms. For instance in 2019, offline sales far outnumbered online sales for travel intermediaries and while there was slightly less of a gap in 2020, this was due to many bricks-and-mortar intermediaries being closed during 2020, as a result of COVID-19.
Azerbaijan not only has to contend with the after effects of COVID-19 in the coming years, it also has to resolve the current armed conflict at the Armenian border. As a result, travellers will be very reluctant to visit Azerbaijan in the short term.
