Cameroon struggled with a number of negative factors towards the end of the review period in its efforts to promote the country as a viable attractive tourist destination. Despite robust efforts by the government to improve infrastructure such as expanding airports, attracting investment from global brands to build hotels, and a range of promotional efforts to highlight the country’s natural beauty, eco-tourism and rich heritage, civil unrest in the North and South West regions in addition to terror attacks by various groups in the Far North triggered strong warnings from travel advisories about visiting the country, unless on essential business.
Although internet penetration remained low in Cameroon over the review period, investments are being made to improve the service to a higher number of households. Online travel intermediaries therefore, continued to hold marginal value share within overall travel intermediaries in 2019, despite recording ongoing strong current value growth.
Domestic trips by air, for both business (the more dominant type of domestic traveller) and leisure, recorded strong declines in 2019. Although land continued to be the preferred mode of transport for both segments, domestic business travellers in particular, were severally impacted by the grounding of leading domestic airline Camair’s fleet in 2019.
Cameroon has many positive attributes that the government and various ministries would like to highlight and promote to potential visitors to the country. One is the ability to draw on the wealth of varied ingredients and cuisine that is produced by different areas of the country and introduce them to travellers through agri-tourism.
There are a number of positive indicators to predict an improved performance for travel and tourism in Cameroon over the forecast period. Higher growth of inbound arrivals, improved infrastructure such as expanding and upgrading of major airports and increasing numbers of hotels and short-term rentals becoming available will be supported by the expected huge influx of football fans that will arrive in 2021 for the Africa Cup of Nations.
