Local investment strengthens the industry

In addition to marketing and advertising to promote El Salvador as a destination, local tourism authorities are focusing on the experience tourists have while in the country. Much of the investment destined for tourism is being allocated locally to increase security, create new signs, give proper maintenance, care for natural resources, and most importantly instruct local entrepreneurs and industry workers to provide the best possible service.

Online travel continues to develop

While many providers are showcasing their products and services online, sales remain low. While online bookings and reservations are common, transactions are most commonly carried out in person. This is expected to increase over the forecast period due to global consumer trends.

Low-cost airlines growing

Low-cost airlines had an important year in 2015. Several companies operating as low-cost carriers either launched or increased their operations to service the country’s airlift. Most companies are offering short-haul trips, but are also seeking to open new routes that could bring important opportunities for tourism in the country. With new routes, the country could see increased arrivals from other source markets.

Innovation drives growth

As they search for other opportunities, a group of health providers and tour operators signed agreements in 2015 to showcase options in the medical tourism niche. The company that oversees these providers is located outside El Salvador, but members are all local providers grouped with similar counterparts from other countries. This type of initiative could become more popular in the forecast period, and possibly be orchestrated by local parties. At a local level, many companies are seeking international accreditation to be able to showcase and sell their services to foreign customers.

Investment to support growth

Over the forecast period, tourism is expected to see continued growth in El Salvador. The work of tourism authorities and the private sector should yield positive results as they hope to gain a better positioning for the country’s image as a tourism destination. Investment in the development of infrastructure, lodging, and human resources capacity should help the industry to keep growing at a healthy rate.
