In 2019, tourism in Fiji witnessed a year of record visitor arrivals with growth in arrivals across all of its key inbound source countries. Australia was the largest source country accounting for just under half of all arrivals.
In response to the initial stages of the global pandemic, the Government of Fiji toughened border security on 3 February 2020. On 27 February, borders were closed to foreign nationals who had been in mainland China, South Korea, Italy, Iran or Spain within 14 days of their intended travel to Fiji.
National airlines, Fiji Airways suspended 95% of its international flights in response to the COVID-19 impact around the world in the first half of 2020. Restricted border control measures enforced across the majority of airlines’ networks made it almost impossible for airlines to continue scheduled operations.
Industry players in online intermediaries had been making solid progress prior to the onset of COVID-19 though online sales remained small. However, sales plummeted for both offline and online in 2020 as affected countries around the globe closed their borders and banned all unnecessary travel in a bid to halt transmission of the virus.
Given that Fiji’s economy is highly dependent on tourism, the Fiji government announced the country is looking to attract “VIPs” to help restore Fiji’s paralysed tourism-dependent economy post lockdown. The country will also welcome travellers arriving by yacht who are prepared to spend 14 days at sea – or make up the balance in quarantine in Fiji.
