The COVID-19 pandemic has hit the travel industry in Georgia very hard. The government acted quickly to close border closures and suspend flights, as well as train travel and other internal restrictions on movement.
Full border controls were imposed on 17 March, with only citizens, permanent residents, their relatives and freight transport workers allowed to enter. Universities, schools and kindergartens closed on 19 March, as did shopping centres, theatres and other public places apart from post offices and banks.
Airlines in Georgia have effectively been shut down since March, when the government suspended all international flights. The date to resume air travel has been repeatedly pushed back as the government sought to control the virus and currently stands at 31 October, and given surge in regional infection rates in autumn 2020, resumption of a regular schedule at that point seems unlikely.
Although more consumers are shifting to pure online providers for travel, a trend that is set to accelerate dramatically in 2020 as physical outlets have been closed as part of lockdown, the sector faces significant obstacles to recovery. The main difficulty is operator and consumer uncertainty about how long or how severe restrictions on movement will be, especially as the virus appears to be making a return in many countries.
Georgia’s relatively strict response to the COVID-19 should stand it in good stead in the aftermath of the pandemic. It has had a low level of infection rates, and this should encourage the return of many visitors.
