In 2015 Grenada continued to enjoy positive growth in inbound arrivals. Stay-over arrivals witnessed healthy growth, while the number of cruise passengers registered double-digit growth, as cruise calls recorded a significant increase to reach 197. The strong promotional campaigns implemented by the Grenada Tourism Authority in source markets contributed to the success of the market. The economy of the country relies mainly on the services sector, with tourism playing an important role, which helped public investment in the travel and tourism market and related infrastructure.
Caribbean destinations are enjoying growth in tourism with new hotel developments and a variety of activities available to visitors. Strong growth in countries such as Grenada is encouraging airlines to include more destinations on their schedules. In 2015 the GTA implemented a special promotion targeting young females travelling in groups, which could have a positive impact on the further development of health and wellness tourism.
Tourism is one of the key markets for the development of Grenada’s economy, and as such, the government is set to continue to devote resources to the further development of the market. The National Tourism Strategic Plan for the period 2013-2017 will continue to focus its financial resources on developing areas such as eco-tourism, edu-tourism and heritage tourism. In addition, the opening of two large resorts between 2016 and 2018 will likely contribute to the further development of tourism and higher numbers of foreign visitors over the forecast period.
