Country Report

Executive Summary

Sep 2019
More Guatemalans see the local sights, though visitors have to remain cautious

Overall, Guatemala has experienced steady real GDP growth for several years running. This has led to strong growth in domestic leisure travel and the increasing ability to afford flying over driving in some cases.

Offline bookings continue to dwarf online sales

Although growth in intermediaries online sales is eclipsing that of intermediaries offline sales, the overall level remains low. Traditional travel agencies are struggling to back up their online presence with a booking facility, owing to a lack of knowledge as to how to promote themselves effectively on third party platforms such as Expedia.

Higher-end hotels are limited to Guatemala City, leaving quality accommodation hard to find elsewhere

Guatemala may not be known among investors as a place of political stability or reduced crime, but it is known as one that enjoys good weather year-round, with a cultural and natural richness and proximity to the US. It has great potential to grow as the Mayan civilisation left several venues in the country, which are unique and attract an increasing number of travellers.

Low cost – high take-up

With booking charges, taxes, high fuel prices and other costs at airports ramping up the price of air tickets in Guatemala, low cost carriers offering more affordable rates have been highly welcomed by travellers. By cutting back on services such as providing snacks and providing televisions on the backs of seats, low cost airlines are able to pass savings on to consumers.

Domestic travel will be boosted by new holidays, with tourism Master Plan set to keep bearing fruit

In August 2018, legislation passed to promote domestic tourism by creating several new mandated holidays in Guatemala. Over the forecast period, these holidays are likely to encourage people to spend more money on domestic travelling.
