The initial impact of COVID-19 in Guatemala began in early March as the government swiftly responded to positive cases with a national lockdown. Government-enforced restrictions quickly shut down land borders as well as air travel, with no foreigners allowed entry except for emergency cases and diplomats.
Restrictions with a corresponding national lockdown were imposed swiftly beginning on 17 March when the country reported its first COVID-19 death. All public transport was suspended, although personal vehicles and taxis were still permitted to travel.
COVID-19 has had a severe impact on flights in Guatemala, impacting all airlines. Operators were required to cease operations from mid-March until at least mid-September, with few exceptions allowed for emergency cases.
In 2020, COVID-19 is expected to negatively impact travel intermediaries, with the impact on traditional intermediaries expected to be more severe. Before the pandemic, Guatemala had relatively underdeveloped online booking portals with few travel agencies knowing how to use online platforms to advertise their product offerings.
In line with the global travel market, travel in Guatemala is expected to be severely impacted by COVID-19 in 2020 and beyond, although the government has committed to saving the important industry which should minimise the negative effects. INGUAT has been a key driver of tourism flows, and it partnered with the private sector in 2020 to create a plan to save the tourism sector’s economy.
